Molcajetes (pronounced mol-ca-he'-te) goes back in South American culture with the Mayan and Aztec cultures for thousands of years as mortar and pestles. They were used to grind grains, herbs and other foods. They were formed from one piece of vesicular basalt, a type of volcanic rock, to a round bowl with three supporting legs. The design of the molcajete frequently had the head of a pig that served as a supporting handle, and a pestle was used as the grinder.

More recently, they've been incorporated into Hispanic culture Today, the contemporary design features a black, charcoal or colored bowl with supporting legs.
